From Me to We: A Roadmap to Compassion

The five stages of human emotion run from apathy to compassion, and most people stall halfway because the emotional comfort zone feels safer.

From “Me” to “We”: A Roadmap to Compassion By: Jon Orozco, MBA, SHRM-SCP Introduction to human emotions At the heart of our existence lies the profound influence of emotions. They shape the contours of our lives in subtle and significant ways. Emotional currents sway our perceptions, guide our interactions, and shape our decisions. This paper examines our feelings progressively. From inwardness to outwardness toward others. Our moods and feelings influence how we perceive the world, interact with others, and make decisions. Our feelings often follow ingrained patterns and habits. We default to specific reactions and behaviors without realizing it. While emotions arise spontaneously, how we respond to and express them can become habitual routines. This paper covers the five stages of human emotion: apathy, pity, sympathy, empathy, and compassion. It also shows why humans tend to stop their progress along the stages. Why? Humans embrace their “emotional comfort zones.” Even when those patterns undermine our well-being and relationships. With awareness and consideration, we can rewire our reactions. We can bring greater self-awareness to our emotions and responses. We can respond skillfully with greater understanding and resilience. That ultimately builds compassion. Our journey toward understanding and caring for each other follows a natural progression. It resonates with some of humanity’s most cherished qualities. As Brown (2020) suggests, apathy breeds disconnection. It reflects a lack of empathy and inward focus that prevents us from relating to others’ experiences. When we are apathetic, we remain content in our worldview rather than seeking common ground. Showing interest in others’ struggles requires effort and confronting discomfort. So apathy is sometimes a defense of laziness or fear. Nevertheless, in normalizing a lack of engagement, we perpetuate separation. Dehumanization enables injustice. Apathy is disinterested in our shared humanity. This may be difficult to hear. It is easier to remain apathetic than to understand each other’s pain and forge meaning. Yet in doing so, we sacrifice relationships and belonging. As Dr. Brene Brown argues, we build inroads between us only by daring to care. Overcoming apathy is critical for creating genuine bonds. Pity and sympathy, although well-intentioned, inadvertently create a chasm between those suffering and those observing. Smith (2021) points out that these responses acknowledge hardship from afar. They fail to connect with the experience. There’s a lack of shared emotional reverberation. Empathy allows us to immerse ourselves in others’ feelings, fostering a profound connection, as articulated by Johnson (2019). Our human connection dismantles the “us versus them” mentality (Brown, 2020). Shared comprehension of struggle gives rise to a sense of community. Empathy also unveils the unjust systems perpetuating suffering, particularly among marginalized groups (Cameron et al., 2019). With this foundation, as proposed by Davis (2022), compassion finds fertile ground to flourish. Compassion blends caring concern with sagacious action. It moves us beyond passive sympathy toward proactive justice by tackling root causes. While pity and sympathy possess limitations, empathy is potent in bridging gaps. Empathy paves the way for cultivating purposeful betterment and forging a more equitable society characterized by solidarity amidst adversity. Incorporating Maslow’s hierarchy of needs (Maslow, 1943) adds depth to this structure. It aligns compassion with the progression of human growth. As Maslow explains, fulfilling fundamental physiological and safety prerequisites lays the groundwork for embracing loftier aspirations. Once basic needs find satisfaction, as Lee (2021) highlights, compassion can thrive. We gain the ability to extend care outward. Maslow (1943) envisioned self-actualization as the summit of realization. A state of reaching one’s full potential and talents. From this juncture, as Smith (2022) expounds, self-transcendence enters the realm of possibility. This concept signifies the connection to realms beyond self. Through compassion, we actively contribute to others’ journey toward realizing their potential. This state of self-transcendence creates profound realms marked by grace, composure, and unconditional love. The constraints of ego and attachment fall away, allowing our compassion to flow unhindered. We acknowledge our interconnectedness. Within this paradigm, compassion is a channel for ascending Maslow’s hierarchy. It propels us toward self-actualization and self-transcendence. Compassion becomes both a product of human evolution and a catalyst for it. Maslow’s hierarchy imparts a richer perspective by unveiling how compassion takes root when primal needs find fulfillment. Yet it also propels us toward soaring human potential. Through compassion, we extend our gaze beyond self, enabling growth to flourish for the collective. Remember, compassion isn’t just a starting point. It is the core of this journey. It goes far beyond a mere sentiment. Ackerman (2020) reminds us that it drives us to volunteer, donate, console, and fight against injustice. Research confirms that compassion enhances health (Klimecki et al., 2013), cultivates connections, and builds communities (Seppala, 2013). In ethics, it resonates with the Golden Rule. Treating others as we wish to be treated, as Rachels and Rachels (2019) advocate. Hurdles exist on this path. Prejudices, biases, and the boundaries drawn by limited exposure to diversity can brake compassion’s growth (Cameron et al., 2019). Surmounting these challenges calls for proactive dedication. We must dismantle prejudiced notions and unearth our own biases through education, broader horizons, and an open mindset. Research corroborates that empathy and compassion wane when we perceive others as vastly different or distant from our identity. Building bridges across these divides through dialogue and shared encounters is a pivotal strategy. The start of nurturing compassion rests within. Cultivating self-compassion and treating ourselves with the same kindness Neff and Germer (2018) advocate is essential to fulfilling our esteem needs. Extending compassion to others becomes a paradox if we lack it for ourselves. Berating ourselves, subjecting ourselves to self-critique, or disregarding our pains spawns resentment rather than care. Self-compassion entails addressing ourselves with the same tender empathy, care, and validation we’d extend to a friend grappling with adversity. Through self-acceptance, we confront our imperfections with courage and gentleness. Self-compassion is a wellspring of emotional fortitude and resilience, fueling our ongoing growth. The epicenter of our compassion journey lies within ourselves. To be clear, prejudices and bias can impede our connection with those who seem different. Self-criticism can be a barricade to nurturing compassion within. Nevertheless, with determination, we can remove these barriers. By fostering self-compassion and embracing the spectrum of human experience, we carve a continuous passage for compassion to flourish. Right now, the urgency of nurturing compassion has never been more evident. Our world pulses with contemporary events and movements casting a spotlight on human rights, inequality, healthcare gaps, poverty, and the weight of suffering, as illuminated by Amnesty International (2022). As Armstrong (2011) emphasized, compassion is an impassioned summons to action. A force that raises the collective human spirit. The very core of our identity and potential resides in caring for one another. A sentiment that resonates with the words of Frankl (1946). This path is not theoretical abstraction. It’s a tangible guide we can all navigate. We start from our unique vantage points, whether in the depths of apathy or the heights of empathy. Embark on a genuine quest to apprehend the experiences of others. Tread in their shoes. Feel their challenges. Validate their battles. That groundwork becomes the bedrock for purposeful deeds to alleviate suffering. Through volunteer initiatives, charitable contributions, advocacy, and community support. We knit a tapestry of solidarity by forging connections rooted in shared aspirations and trials. In this, we transcend ego-driven concerns, embracing the profound interconnectedness that unites us.
