You Cannot Have Equality Without Equity First
Equality is treating everyone the same. Equity is adjusting so everyone can actually compete. One has to come before the other, in that order.
Defining Equity and Equality People confuse Equity with Equality and use them interchangeably. That’s inaccurate. You cannot have Equality without starting with Equity. Equity means adjusting for the needs of individuals who want to compete fairly and have a shot at winning. Picture a timed word puzzle with everyone playing. We hand out the document face down, start everyone at the same time, and the first to finish wins. That’s Equality. Technically true. Now consider this. Emma needs glasses to read the paper. Judi needs her document printed in Braille. Isaiah has dyslexia, which means he needs double the reading time. Equity provides those resources so they have a fighting chance. Equity isn’t giving someone the answers or an unfair advantage. Equity puts them on an even playing field. Think Equity as outcomes-based. Equality as equal treatment. When we have Equity, we can have Equality. The absence of Equity is Inequality. *** Jon is a fractional Chief People Officer.
